News/Talk 760 WJR signed on to the radio airwaves on May 4, 1922, broadcasting at 517 watts as WCX-AM from the Free Press Building in Detroit. Over the years, through a change in call letters and several changes on the AM dial, WJR grew to be the largest, strongest, most respected radio station in the state of Michigan, broadcasting at 50,000 watts, 24 hours a day from high atop the golden tower of the Fisher Building.
